4 songs and how they are made.
Sweet Leaf- Black Sabbath
This is a classic heavy metal song made in 1971. The song consists of a riff based around the pentatonic scale. The production is fairly simple as at the time the band didn’t have much money to spend on production. It is recorded live as is the whole album (Master Of Reality.) Tony Iommi has a very unique style by using basic techniques but making them his own. This is clear in this song. Geezer Butler is playing his bass very aggressively to match what Iommi Is playing and to add depth to the riff. Bill Ward is playing very groovy beats to give it a stoner metal vibe. The song is mainly just one section but has an interlude with a guitar solo but then goes back to the main section.
D’yer Mak’er- Led Zeppelin
This song is a rock song made in 1973 with a reggae influence. Production wise it is very rock. Especially on John Bonhams part because the drums are recorded in a big room which is very typical of rock drum sound. Jimmy Pages guitar doesn’t have any delay and not much reverb which is also typical of rock guitar because it metaphorically sounds closer to the listener. But stylistically it is very reggae influenced because of the off beat rhythms. This song has two sections. The first is the reggae section and there’s a rock section.
Georgy Porgy- Toto
This song is very tight production wise. It is a groovy pop song made in 1978. The low end is very tight. The bass guitar sits in very well with the kick drum, every instrument has its own space in the mix; There are guitars. There is piano. There is bass. There is drums and there are strings. This song has 2 sections. There are funk influences in Steve Lukathers playing in this song. There is a lot of soul influence in both lead and backing vocals. Both drums and bass are locked in pretty well to give the song more of a pop feel.
Chocolate Cake- Crowded house.
This is the first track on the Woodface album (1991) This is a pop song. It is noticeable that there prominent guitar parts in the mix which are staccato to make it stand out. The vocals are harmonized to make the track sound more full. The snare drum is compressed to make it noticable. There are 4 sections in this song. A verse a chorus a bridge and an outro.
