Single Blog

We have now recorded our single ‘never’ and we have called the band ‘Rydah’

‘Never’ is a funk rock song influenced by ‘always on the run’ by Lenny Kravitz. Production wise we wanted the song to sound American and raw so no overproduction. We wanted gritty sounds. So we used overdriven guitars and standard rock drum beats to give it a stripped down rock sound. We used the dorian mode to create this to give it a funk element and a sweet sound that isn’t too happy or sad sounding. This would be an appropriate song to be played on rock radio stations and to be played at music venues which accept rock music. This isnt so much a commercial song because rock has never been commercial in England.

Here is the blog documented over the time we were working on this song.

First of all we have been jamming as a band and I have come up with a riff in E dorian which is a funk rock riff. We have come up with 2 guitar parts for this riff. Which harmonises and also plays up an octave from the first guitar.

Then we decided to create a bass line to the song which serves the song well but has a punchy simple feel to it. It synchronises with the guitars and drums really well. Also in this session we came up with a chord progression for the verse which changes to the key of E major as apposed to the chorus where the key is E minor. The chord progression is E///C#m///A/B/E///

Now we have come up with the idea of adding a guitar solo section in which is 16 bars long. The rhythm part is just playing the first bar of the main riff on repeat. Since it is my guitar solo I had an idea of a bluesy funk solo. The band agrees this will serve the song well.

Now the solo is completed. The song structure is complete. It goes A B A B A C A. A being the chorus, B being the verse and C being the bridge/solo. Whilst we were putting this together, Maisie came up with the lyrics for the whole song which is about being yourself and finally becoming what you really are and not going back to the old person you were who is fake. Which is why the hook is ‘never going back.’

We have now completed the song and we have started practicing it a lot to prepare for recording and performing it. As seen in the video below.
